Chapter 20

Far from home

He scrambled frantically for cover from the ferocious bullets coming his way, Fortunately for him, he discovered a grey coloured safe just in time, and he hid behind it to avoid the horizontal rain of terror.

What was a safe doing here and why hadn’t he seen it before?.

But that wasn’t the suitable question at the moment, was it?.

The deafening sound grew louder and then suddenly died down.

They stopped shooting.

“Why did they stop” Dave was trying to understand why “Maybe they think they got me”.

The silence was choking him, he didn’t breathe, he couldn’t breathe, he still had his gun in his hand but yet he felt as defenseless and open as the blue sky.

He listened carefully.

“You got the grenade”

“Yeah”

“Toss it”

It was at this moment Dave understood. They knew he was alive, they were just stalling and now they wanted to eliminate him for good. He considered making a dash out of the room, but he would face the men and he would be literally blown to bits if he stayed here.

He was out of time.

He heard a thud and he knew what it was, he laid flat on the floor while still behind the safe.

The safe, how ironic.

Then the heard the deafening sound and saw the bright light that accompanied the explosive device and then Dave couldn’t feel, but he knew he had been hit.

But his only regret was knowing that he would die far from home.
