Chapter 7

Countdown

Dave checked his watch.

4:37am.

The perfect time to go for a run.

He got downstairs to the fridge and ate a sausage which was a leftover from the night before, He got his Asics gel 7 trainers and left the Book compound, He took a turn left and another turn right while simultaneously changing his pace. He ran with the endurance and form of a sprinter preparing for glory at the olympics.

Diego was the one who had introduced him to his “Morning run”, It was about eight years ago on a chilly wednesday morning at 5:22am with it’s not so bright sky in a Sao Paulo beach, Diego was sixteen and he was fourteen, He had seen Diego come out earlier and had tracked him all the way to the beach, He had watched him for about fifteen minutes, He had known a beach to be a place of fun, white sand, awesome tides, beautiful scenery and sexy ladies and here this guy was turning it into an all round gym, iniquisitively he approached him to truly understand what he was doing.

“Why are you stressing yourself so much” Dave had asked.

“To improve my stamina, plus they’re sprints i can’t do them without being stressed if i had wanted to” Diego answered.

“I bet i could do twenty sprints from here to that heap without breaking a sweat” Dave challenged.

“I doubt that, but be my guest”.

“If i do it, you stop your sprints, they give me the creeps, but if you win, I’ll engage in your morning run for two months” Dave said.

“You just got two months subscription to Diego’s gym” Diego said whilst laughing.

Dave couldn’t even do seven sprints before he started panting and gasping for breath, And in the matter of breaking sweat, The Niagara falls couldn’t even do justice to the amount of sweat on his body, Meanwhile Diego was laughing at the expected turn of events.

“This shit is hard” Dave said between short bursts of breath.

“Oh really” Diego said sarcastically “You better get used to it cause sprint lessons begin tomorrow”.

Two months turned into three months and three months succumbed to six months and for as long as he could remember he kept doing his “Morning run” except on weekends.

“Those were good times before shit happened” Dave thought to himself.

He checked his watch.

6:39am. Time to be heading back.

While on his way back, he admired the scenery of the old looking buildings perfectly well aligned and that smell, yes, that smell of freshly baked bread that always invaded the french air time to time, His phone rang.

“Hello”

“Dave Book” The anonymous voice said.

“Yes, do i know you” Dave said.

“No you don’t, but i have your mother and it’s either you follow what i tell you in the next five minutes or you’ll get her head on a platter” The anonymous voice added. The countdown begins now.

And at that moment he remembered a poem he had seen somewhere.

“Stay with me, God. The night is dark,

The night is cold: My little spark

Of courage dies. The night is long

Be with me, God, and make me strong”
